Maharashtra Real Estate Authority Mandates QR Codes for Real Estate Agents under MahaRERA Guidelines

Since May 2017, over 42,000 real estate projects and more than 44,000 real estate agents have been registered in Maharashtra, according to data provided by MahaRERA. This substantial number highlights the significance of ensuring transparent information dissemination to both agents and buyers.

Commencing from August 1, the QR code mandate for developers necessitates the inclusion of black-and-white scannable barcodes in all real estate project advertisements across visual media platforms. Now, this requirement is being extended to real estate agents as well, reinforcing the commitment to transparency and accessibility.

By scanning these QR codes using their smartphones, potential buyers can access comprehensive information about a specific real estate project, the agent associated with it, and other pertinent details about the projects. The QR codes are expected to simplify the process of gathering information, making it more convenient for consumers to make informed decisions.

MahaRERA’s order issued on August 21 emphasizes that the QR codes should be legible, readable, and easily detectable using software applications. These codes will be placed alongside the MahaRERA project registration number. Non-compliance with this directive could be deemed a violation of MahaRERA’s guidelines, potentially resulting in penalties. Section 65 of the Act empowers MahaRERA to impose penalties of up to Rs 50,000 for such violations, with a minimum penalty set at Rs 10,000.

The move to extend the QR code requirement to real estate agents underscores MahaRERA’s commitment to fostering transparency, accountability, and consumer protection within the real estate sector. As more stakeholders in the industry come under the purview of these regulations, it is expected to contribute to a more informed and empowered homebuyer community in Maharashtra.
